Health Insurance Information at UCI

UCI offers the UC Student Health Insurance Plan or UC SHIP so that every student has adequate health insurance options during their college career.

Your UCI health coverage option

Did you know that one of the non-academic conditions of enrollment is to have health insurance? If you’re looking for health insurance options, you can sign up for the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP).

UC SHIP is a comprehensive health insurance plan that includes affordable coverage for services both on campus and in the UC Irvine community.

You can review ACADEMIC YEAR UC SHIP coverage periods and fees here.

Visit the UCI Student Health Center to take a closer look at your health insurance coverage options.

Undergraduate Student Health Insurance Plan (USHIP) Waivers

All students enrolled are required to have health insurance. The cost of the university’s health insurance is billed each term as a component of the all students’ overall fee assessment.

Students who can demonstrate they have adequate or comparable health insurance coverage can apply for a fee waiver to keep their own insurance rather than purchasing coverage from the university. The waivers are processed by the UCI Student Health Center.

Students may be awarded an anticipated USHIP waiver as a placeholder award based on their history of waiving out. At the beginning of each term, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will review and determine if other aid already awarded may need to be revised.

If you have any questions on how waiving or not waiving out of the required health insurance may affect your other aid, please schedule an appointment with a financial aid counselor.
